Conference Call
JK Lakshmi Cement
Estimates Rs 120 crore to 150 crore loss from fire in the under-construction Chhattisgarh plant
The management of JK Lakshmi Cement conducted a conference call on 12th April 2013 to discuss the recent fire incident that took place in the company's green-field Chhattisgarh plant on 4th April 2013. Dr. Shailendra Chouksey (whole time Director) and Mr. Sudhir Bidkar (CFO) addressed the call.

Highlights-

  • The company's 2.7 mn metric tonnes, under-construction factory in Durg, Chhattisgarh was set on fire on 4th April 2013 by agitated villagers from one of the nearby villages seeking jobs at the proposed plant.
  • The company says that these villagers did not have suitable qualification for the job in the plant.
  • Permanent jobs in the plant would arise only when the factory is ready for commissioning and would also depend on the eligibility and needed-skill set of the required workforce.
  • The company has so far not acceded to the villagers demand for permanent employment.
  • The villagers belonging to one particular village had sought employment for all the inhabitants of the village irrespective of age and expertise which was infeasible considering there was no requirement for employing so many of them.
  • Certain administration building and earth moving equipments and vehicles got damaged due to the fire and the company has estimated the initial loss at around Rs 120 crore to Rs 150 crore.
  • Earlier the company has estimated loss of Rs 250 crore to 300 crore when it first filed the police FIR, but this was revised down to Rs 120 crore to Rs 150 crore on further examination.
  • But the loss amount is subject to change following the assessment of impact of high temperatures on the machinery.
  • The plant has adequate insurance cover and the insurers are currently in the process of evaluating the loss which would take another 7-10 days.
  • Consequently the commissioning of the plant is expected to be delayed by 2-3 months to around June 2014.
  • The total capital expenditure on the 2.7 mn metric tonnes plant is over Rs 1250 crore.
