Targets 25% market share in Alkaline batteries by 2012

Panasonic Battery India Company (Panasonic) held a press meet in Mumbai for launching long lasting alkaline batteries for Indian market. Following are the highlights of the meet.
Highlights of the meet

Panasonic Battery India Company, an overseas manufacturing and sales company of the Japan based Matsushita Battery Industrial company, launched a range of long lasting Alkaline batteries for Indian market.

The company will not manufacture such batteries in India and rather will import from Thailand and market here. The present market size for Alkaline batteries is not huge enough for setting up a manufacturing unit.

At present the majority of the total batteries demand is manganese battery in India, about 2235 million pieces in FY06. While the total demand of Alkaline batteries was just about 22 million pieces (approx 1% of total dry battery demand in India).

However the management estimates that the demand for zinc carbon batteries will be growing by 2-3% while that for Alkaline batteries will grow by 30-35% going forward. Management sees huge potential for Alkaline batteries going forward.

It is estimated that the market size for Alkaline batteries and manganese batteries would be about 130 million and 2571 million pieces respectively by year 2012 and 558 million and 2888 million by year 2017.

In dry cell batteries, Panasonic has about 18% market share with about 500 million pieces (3^rd position in India).

The total cost of production for the company has surged by about 10% on the back of increase in costs of basic raw materials like tin plate, zinc and PVC.

The company expects to sale about 2-3 million pieces in current year for Alkaline batteries and expects to have 25% market share in Zinc alkaline batteries by year 2010
