Adani Power implements green ammonia pilot project at Mundra plant
The company's collaboration with Japanese firms and advancements in ultra supercritical technology highlight decarbonization efforts.
Adani Power has launched a pioneering pilot project at its Mundra plant to incorporate green ammonia into its decarbonization efforts. The project involves the co-firing of up to 20% green ammonia in the boiler of a traditional coal-fired 330MW unit. This green ammonia is derived from green hydrogen produced through electrolysis using renewable energy, providing a carbon-neutral alternative to fossil fuels when combusted.

In addition to the green ammonia initiative, Adani Power has set industry standards for emissions and integrated advanced 'Ultra Supercritical technology' into its newest plants. The collaboration with Japan's IHI Corporation & KOWA will facilitate the pilot project and potentially expand it to other APL units and stations. Combustion tests with a 20% ammonia blend have commenced in Japan, with plans for implementation at the Mundra Power Station once economic parity is achieved.

This landmark initiative is part of the Japan-India Clean Energy Partnership, which has the goal of bolstering energy security, achieving carbon neutrality, and driving economic growth.

"Adani Power is fully committed to reducing its carbon footprint through adoption of latest technologies and proactive measures across our business value chain. In furtherance of this vision, we are happy to partner with IHI and Kawa for blending green ammonia for our Mundra plant, which will reduce CO2 emissions. We will continue to integrate cutting-edge technologies increasingly to reduce emissions in the intermediate term," said Anil Sardana, managing director, Adani Power.

Adani Power, a part of the diversified Adani Group, is the largest private thermal power producer in India. The company has an installed thermal power capacity of 15,210 MW spread across eight power plants in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan. The company said that the revenue includes one-time prior period items of Rs 1,125 crore on account of domestic coal shortfall.
