RIL partners Brookfield Infra and Digital Realty for India data center business
The joint venture is developing world class data centers across multiple locations in India.
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has entered into an agreement to invest alongside Brookfield Infrastructure and Digital Realty in their Indian SPVs (special purpose vehicles) set up for developing data centers in India.

RIL will hold a 33.33% stake in each of the Indian SPVs and become an equal partner.

Digital Realty, the world's largest provider of cloud and carrier-neutral data center solutions, has a joint venture (JV) with Brookfield Infrastructure to develop data centers in India. The JV, branded as 'Digital Connexion: A Brookfield, Jio and Digital Realty Company', is currently developing data centers in Chennai and Mumbai.

The first 20 MW data center in Chennai is expected to be completed by the end of 2023, and a 40 MW data center is planned in Mumbai. These data centers will be connected to critical terrestrial and undersea connectivity infrastructure, serving as global connectivity hubs for Indian companies and gateways into India for multinational companies.

The demand for data center capacity in India is expected to increase significantly due to the rise in mobile data consumption, digital services, and the ongoing 5G roll-out. The JV will serve global and local enterprises, SMBs, and startups in India for their cloud and colocation requirements. The data centers will leverage Digital Realty's energy-efficient platform design, Brookfield's knowledge of the Indian infrastructure market, and Jio's digital and connectivity ecosystem.

Kiran Thomas, CEO of Jio Platforms, expressed excitement about partnering with Digital Realty and Brookfield to provide cutting-edge cloud solutions to enterprise and SMB clients. The partnership aims to support digital transformation, enhance competitiveness, and improve efficiency. Thomas also acknowledged the Indian government for granting infrastructure status to data centers, which is crucial for India's goal of becoming a $1 trillion digital economy by 2025.

Arpit Agrawal, managing director of Brookfield, highlighted the importance of data centers in supporting digitalization in India and expressed enthusiasm for expanding their partnership with Reliance. The collaboration aims to provide solutions for the digital transformation needs of Indian and global corporations.

Serene Nah, managing director and Head of Asia Pacific at Digital Realty, emphasized the untapped potential of the Indian data center market due to the country's rapid adoption of digital business models, large population, and government support for technology-driven economic development. The joint venture aims to accelerate Digital India by developing and operating high-quality data centers across the country in collaboration with global leaders in digital infrastructure.

Reliance Industries is India's largest private sector company, with diverse operations in hydrocarbon exploration, refining, petrochemicals, renewables, retail, and digital services.

Brookfield Infrastructure is a global infrastructure company that owns and operates long-life assets in various sectors across multiple regions. In India, Brookfield manages $24 billion in assets across infrastructure, real estate, renewable power, transition, and private equity.

Digital Realty specializes in data center, colocation, and interconnection solutions, providing a secure data meeting place and innovative architecture for managing data challenges. With a global footprint of over 300 facilities in 27 countries, Digital Realty enables connected data communities worldwide.

Digital Connexion is a joint venture between Brookfield Infrastructure, Reliance Industries, and Digital Realty. It offers highly-connected and scalable data center solutions to meet the infrastructure needs of enterprises and digital services companies in India. The JV leverages Jio's digital ecosystem, Brookfield's infrastructure expertise, and Digital Realty's extensive data center platform to provide connectivity gateways across multiple regions.
