Alstom concludes contract with BHEL for NPGCL-Nabinagar 3x660 MW supercritical boilers project in India
Worth approximately €85 million
Alstom has been awarded a contract worth approximately €85 million ($115 million) by Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL), to supply components for three units of 660 MW supercritical boilers of Nabinagar Power Generating Company, a joint venture company of NTPC and Bihar State Electricity Board, located in Nabinagar, Bihar, India. Alstom is the sole licensor of the supercritical technology of BHEL and is also collaborating with BHEL on execution of the supercritical boiler projects under the licence. This project has been awarded to BHEL as part of the NTPC Bulk 660 MW tender.

Under the scope of the contract, Alstom will co-operate with BHEL in designing the boilers and supply identified pressure parts of the 660 MW supercritical boilers, along with pulverisers and airpreheater components. It will also assist BHEL with technical advisors during the erection and commissioning of the units. Key components will be manufactured in Alstom's manufacturing facilities in Wellsville and Concordia (USA), as well as in Durgapur and Shahabad (India). The units are expected to be commissioned by 2017-18.

The new Nabinagar contract follows the supercritical boiler contract won by Alstom for Mouda last year. It is in addition to six contracts signed with BHEL between 2008 to 2012 for supercritical boilers of 660MW, 700MW and 800 MW in Barh II, Krishnapatnam, Bara, Yeramaras, Bellary and Mouda in India.

Alstom's supercritical coal-fired boilers are state-of-the-art technology and designed to address the challenges of the power industry in India, to achieve increased efficiency and reduced emissions. Their design incorporates the most advanced tangential firing system with a new overfire air configuration for improved firing system, to enhance boiler performance. In addition to this, the supercritical boiler technology also helps in achieving about 3-4% higher plant efficiency compared to conventional subcritical design. Supercritical technology is the most adapted to address India's challenges for clean coal power generation additions.
