Net up 16% thanks to tax write back

Reliance Power has registered 59% growth in its sales for the quarter ended March 2016. Higher sales together with 320 bps expansion in operating profit margin to 47.6%, has facilitated 71% jump in operating profit to Rs 1240.56 crore. Though other income stood higher by 7% to Rs 48.31 crore, dragged by higher interest cost and depreciation, the PBT was down by 35% to Rs 236.65 crore. But taxation being a write back of RS 83.51 crore compared to a provision of Rs 89.38 crore in the corresponding previous period, the net profit was eventually higher by 16% to Rs 320.16 crore.
  • Sale was higher by 59% to Rs 2604.85 crore riding on increased power generation with newer generation capacity getting stabilized.
  • The 320 bps expansion in OPM to 47.6% was largely due to sharp fall in fuel cost. Staff cost as proportion to sales net of stocks was up by 100 bps to 1.7%. Similarly the other expenses were up by 530 bps to 10.9%. But the fuel cost was down by 960 bps to 39.8 crore.
  • Other income was higher by 7% to Rs 48.31 crore. The interest and depreciation cost was up by 176% and 121% respectively to Rs 788.88 crore and Rs 263.34 crore respectively. Thus the PBT was down by 35% to Rs 236.65 crore.
  • Taxation was a write back of Rs 83.51 crore compared to a provision of Rs 89.38 crore in the corresponding previous period. Thus the PAT was up by 16% to Rs 320.16 crore.

Yearly performance

Standalone sales were higher by 55% to Rs 10670.13 crore. But with operating profit margin expand by 780 bps to 45.3%; the operating profit was up by sharp 87% to Rs 4830.17 crore. After accounting for higher other income, higher interest and higher depreciation cost the PBT was up by 22% to Rs 1565.55 crore. The taxation was down by 21% to Rs 203.61 crore. Thus the PAT was up by 32% to Rs 1361.94 crore.
