Central Bank of India gains on turnaround Q3 performance
Central Bank of India rose 2.07% to Rs 19.75 after reporting a net profit of Rs 155.32 crore in Q3 December 2019 compared with a net loss of Rs 718.23 crore in Q3 December 2018.

Profit before tax (PBT) stood at Rs 447.11 crore in Q3 2019 compared with pre-tax loss of Rs 1096.64 crore in the corresponding quarter last fiscal.

Total income rose 15% to Rs 7278.29 crore in Q3 December 2019 from Rs 6329.17 crore in Q3 December 2018.

The bank's managing director and CEO Pallav Mohapatra told the media that "The profit was mainly on account of reduction in cost of funds by focusing more on CASA, better trading profit due to a balanced investment portfolio and recovery from written-off accounts."

Net interest income stood at Rs 2022 crore in Q3 FY20, up 11.34% from Rs 1816 crore in Q3 FY19. Net interest margin rose to 2.92% in Q3 December 2019 from 2.74% in Q3 December 2018.

Operating profit surged 137.17% to Rs 1,696.32 crore in Q3 December 2019 as against Rs 715.21 crore in Q3 December 2018.

Gross non-performing assets (NPAs) stood at Rs 33,258.59 crore as on 31 December 2019 as against Rs 33,497.22 crore as on 30 September 2019 and Rs 35,332.68 crore as on 31 December 2018.

The ratio of gross NPAs to gross advances stood at 19.99% as on 31 December 2019 as against 19.89% as on 30 September 2019 and 20.64% as on 31 December 2018.

The ratio of net NPAs to net advances stood at 9.26% as on 31 December 2019 as against 7.90% as on 30 September 2019 and 10.32% as on 31 December 2018.

Provisions and contingencies (excluding tax provisions) dropped 31.05% to Rs 1,249.21 crore in Q3 December 2019 over Q3 December 2018. Of this, provisions for NPAs fell 46.60% to Rs 1088.80 crore in Q3 December 2019 over Q3 December 2018.

Provision coverage ratio of the bank was at 73.73% as on 31 December 2019. The Provision Coverage Ratio (PCR) as at 31 December 2019 without technical write off (TWO) of the bank is 59.20%.

The Current Account and Savings Account (CASA) ratio stood at 45.49% in Q3 December 2019 as against 44.64% in Q3 December 2018.

Central Bank of India, a public sector banking institution has their branches in 27 states and 4 union territories in India.

The Government of India holds 92.39% stake in Central Bank of India (as on 31 December 2019).
